Watercolours of fish, crustaceans and other marine animals
- Scope & Content:
-
Watercolours of fish, crustaceans, and other marine animals by an unknown draughtsman likely of German origin. A label pasted down on f. 1 introduces the album as 'A Book of Fishes done at Hamburgh with Mr Ray's Notes'. On the same folio are two small sketches in pen in brown ink of the head of a stag.
All drawings are executed directly on the folios of the manuscript, both recto and verso. Drawings of several animals are typically combined on each folio. Each watercolour is accompanied by inscriptions in pen and ink in German, Latin and English. The name of the fish is inscribed in German, accompanied by a longer note about characteristics and external features of the animal in Latin and / or English. On f. 13v, the name 'John Lambert' is inscribed four times in pen and brown ink.
