- Title:
- Şefikname ve Şerh-i Şefikname - شفيقنامه و شرح شفيقنامه
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains the following two works:
(I) ff 2v-45v : Şefikname, a narrative of the revolt of the Janissaries and the deposition of Sultan Mustafa II in 1115 AH (1703 CE) by Şefik. Mehmet Şefik Efendi, known as Masrafzade, Secretary of the Imperial Divan, died in 1127 AH (1715 CE). The work, which is divided into nine unnumbered makaleler, is written in a style so belaboured and enigmatic as to be unintelligible without the commentary that follows ;
(II) ff 46v-127v : Şerh-i Şefikname, a commentary on the preceding work by Mehmet İbn-i Ahmet İbnü'l-Hac Musalli. The author says in the preface that in the middle of the month of Şaban 1122 AH (October 1710 CE), he was cast by adverse fate upon the shore of Midilli (Lesbos, contemporary Greece). Being detained there during the month of Ramazan, he devoted that enforced leisure to the composition of the present work, with the object of fully elucidating the Arabic and Persian verses and proverbial phrases occurring in the Makalatu'ş-Şefikiye, composed in 1115 AH (1703 CE) by Mehmet Şefik.
The text contains abundant marginal annotations throughout.
This manuscript was likely copied in the 18th century CE.

The official account of the same events as in the Şefikname can be found in Naima II, f 11 from the end, and in Rashid I, f 215 and II, f 5.
For the Şerh, the Asar-i Nev, which is followed by Flügel, wrongly gives the date of 1115 AH (1703 CE) as the date of composition. See Haj. Khal. VI, p. 600; and the Vienna Catalogue II, p. 280.
