- Title:
- Two Ottoman Astronomical Treatises
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains two astronomical treatises on aspects of the use of the quadrant. They were originally written in Arabic by Süleyman Murat Gedüsi (died 1853? CE), and were translated by him into Ottoman Turkish.
(I) ff 1v-10r: Tercüme-yi Gedüsi li'l-Mukatarat, a text on the mukantarat, circular lines parallel to the horizon. It is comprised of a mukaddime and 13 ebvap;
(II) ff 11v-20r : Tercüme-yi Gedüsi li'l-ceyp, a text on the ceyp (sines or radial lines) that is arranged into a mukaddime and 12 ebvap.
The colophon to the two texts is found on f 20r, and reveals that it is the holograph of the author, Süleyman Murat İbn-i Ömer İbn-i Ahmet İbn-i Sadi el-Gedüsi. The date of completion, and likely that of the completion of the manuscript, is given in ebced form as حسرغ, which corresponds to 1268 AH (beginning on 27 October 1851 CE).
