- Title:
- Violin pieces dedicated to Jelly d’Arányi and Adile Fachiri
- Scope & Content:
-
Manuscripts of six pieces for violin with piano or orchestra, dedicated to either Jelly d’Arányi or her sister, Adile Fachiri.
(1). Sir Arthur Somervell: ‘Concertstück in D minor’, for violin and orchestra. Three-page fragment of a short score, written in ink and starting at page 11 until the end. A number of passages are crossed through in pencil. With a dedication: ‘Written and dedicated to Mademoiselle Jelly von Aranyi’. Signed and dated at the end: ‘Sept 1912’.
(2). Leighton Lucas: ‘Serenade for Solo Violin and Small Orchestra’. In three movements: Caprice; Fantasia; Dance. Short score in ink, in oblong format and paginated 1-20; together with a separate violin part that includes some annotations in pencil (‘hardly possible’; ‘not good’). The score is signed by the composer and dated 1933. A dedication on the title page reads: ‘To Miss Jelly D’Aranyi in sincere admiration’.
(3). Bernard Rose: ‘Une Caprice d’une Minute’, for violin and piano. Score in ink and separate violin part, both unannotated. Signed by the composer and dedicated to Adila Fachiri. Dated at the end ‘April 11 1935 Salisbury’.
(4). Cecil Armstrong Gibbs: ‘Suite in A for Violin and Pianoforte’, Op. 101. Five movements (Prelude; Rigadoon; Slow tune; Carol; Coranto) of which the last two were published by Boosey & Hawkes in 1943 (see British Library, g.500.t.(19.)). Score in ink, occasionally annotated in pencil with fingerings; separate violin part heavily annotated with fingerings and bowing indications. Dedicated to Adila Fachiri and signed by the composer. Dated at end of score ‘Windemere Jan 1942’.
(5). James Sherrin: ‘Jig for violin and piano’. Score only, pages 1-14. Unannotated and undated. Sherrin accompanied d’Aranyi in performances in the 1940s and this piece is thought to date from the second half of that decade
(6). Robert O’Dwyer: ‘Derry Air’, transcribed for violin and piano and dedicated to ‘Miss Jelly D’Aranyi’. The score ends mid phrase and is followed by a note in pencil that states: ‘might end here or be followed by violin cadenza modulating to a march tune for finale as slightly indicated in violin part’. The violin part contains the first part of a possible cadenza. Undated.
