Imprint: [Kyōto] , Nakano Gorōzaemon, Enpō 2, 1674. Last line of batsubun on fol. 22b of maki 9 reads: 于時延寶甲寅初秋日 洛陽寓學沙門某誌. This is followed by kanki: 書林 中野五郎左衞門刋行.
Description: 9 kan, formerly in 9 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 41; (2) ff. 30; (3) ff. 28; (4) ff. 38; (5) ff. 29; (6) ff. 44; (7) ff. 42; (8) ff. 41; (9) ff. 22. 27.3 x 18.9 cm. Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 24.3 x 17.2 cm. Single-line borders round main text and commentary.
Main text contained within a single-line frame; commentary above and beside it. Single fishtail design on hanshin.
Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 10-11 lines to page (large characters), 21-22 lines (smaller characters) ; 18-20 characters to line (large characters), 32 (smaller characters).
Renewed dark green front covers of maki 1 and maki 9 only, embossed with a floral pattern. Renewed title slips with manuscript gedai: 百法問答抄一 (九). Title from naidai at head of mokuroku of maki 2-9. (No mokuroku to maki 1.) Hashiragaki: Hyappōshō 百法抄 + maki no. + folio no. In a modern western style buckram binding.
Edition: The only recorded edition to contain a commentary, prior to the edition of 1879. Earlier editions, without commentary, were published in Genna 9 (1623, movable type), Kan'ei 9 (1632) and Keian 1 (1648).
Contents: A Buddhist work, dating probably from Kamakura period, dealing with the history and doctrines of the Hossō sect, in question and answer form. Attributions of authorship to various monks of Kōfukuji, Yakushiji and Kaidan'in are noted on first page of maki 1, but identity of both author and commentator is obscure.
