Author/compiler: Seikaku (also read Shōkaku) 聖覺, 1167-1235, who recorded questions on Jōdo doctrine and replies by Genkū 源空, known as Hōnen Shōnin 法然上人, 1133-1212.

Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu, in a modern chitsu case. ff. 31. 26.2 x 17.8 cm. Fukurotoji.
Movable type. Printing frame 20.6 x 15 cm. No borders. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin.
Kanbun text without printed kunten. 7 lines to page, 17 characters to line.
Dark brown covers, old but not original, without title slip. No gedai. Title from naidai at head of text and from bidai on fol. 31a. Hashiragaki: Ō 大 + folio no.
Edition: Jōdokyō-ban. The only movable type edition of this work, probably printed at a Jōdoshū monastery in the Kyōto region. Undated, but attributable to Genna / Kan'ei period, 1615-44. Earliest printed editions are blockprints dated Eishō 17 永正十七年 (1520), two of Muromachi period (undated), and Keichō 8 (1603). The proliferation of blockprinted editions following the present kokatsuji-ban in Shōhō 3 (1646), Shōhō 4 (1647), Keian 4 (1651), Kanbun 12 (1672) and Enpō 5 (1677) testifies to the importance of this work in Jōdo traditional teaching.
Contents: A record by the monk Seikaku (Shōkaku) 聖覺, disciple of Genkū, of the great debate known as Ōhara mondō 大原問答, which took place in or about 1186 at the Shōrin'in 勝林院 at Ōhara, between Genkū as exponent of Jōdo teachings, and scholar-monks from Nara and Hieizan. A key work in Jōdo Buddhist literature.

Condition: Good, apart from faint water-stains on ff. 1-7 and 28-31.
Impression: Printed from slightly worn type. The form of script and overall hanshiki are archaistic and somewhat crude, both in engraving and impression, suggesting provincial workmanship. In appearance, the printing is reminiscent of a much earlier period, c. mid-Muromachi.
Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Hōrei bunko 寶玲文庫 (ex-libris Frank Hawley), on mikaeshi. Black bookplate, 三柳居杉浦氏藏書記 (ex-libris Sugiura Kyūen 杉浦丘園), pasted on front cover and inner back cover.
Manuscript notes: A few textual headnotes on fol. 2b. Okurigana, kaeriten and sidelines added in black ink c. Kan'ei period.
