- Title:
- Shōji jissōgi 聲字實相義 [声字実相義]
- Scope & Content:
-
Variant title: Shōjigi 聲字義 [声字義]
Author/compiler: Kūkai 空海, founder of the Shingon sect, also known as Kōbō Daishi 弘法大師, 774-835.
Imprint: N.p., n.d . [Kōyasan, late-Kamakura-Nanbokuchō period, 14th century ?] . See under Edition below.
Description: 1 kan, 1 Jō 帖, originally bound in detchō form, later mistakenly bound in western style, as if in fukurotoji format, so that the reverse side of each fold was hidden. Now restored to a semblance of detchō form, in a chitsu case. 10 folds (19 leaves), numbered on inner edge 1-10. Printed on both sides of each leaf. 24.2 x 15.9 cm.
Blockprint. Printing frame 19.5 x 14.5 cm. (average). No borders, nor vertical rules between columns.
Kanbun text, with printed okurigana, okototen and kaeriten. 6 lines to page, 17 characters to line.
Yellow front cover, possibly original, with manuscript gedai: Shōjigi 聲字義 in an early hand. Title from naidai at head of text. In a modern chitsu case.
Edition: Kōya-ban. Numerous references to Kōya-ban editions of Shōji jissōgi are given in Mizuhara's Kōya-ban no kenkyū 高野板之研究. They are taken from (manuscript ?) catalogues dated Bun'ō 1 (1260), Shōan 2 (1300), Enkyō 4 (1311), Gen'ō 2 (1320) and Genkō 3 (1323), but all references are to title only and do not specify date of publication. None is described with enough precision to enable the present edition to be identified.
Contents: A doctrinal work of esoteric (Shingon) Buddhism, forming part of Kūkai's Jikkanshō 十巻章. Shōji jissōgi traditionally made up a trilogy with the same author's Sokushin jōbutsugi 即身成佛義 and Unjigi 吽字義, constituting three of the basic scriptures of Shingon.
