Edition: Gozan-ban, printed at the Sōjiji 総持寺, a monastery formerly in the Noto 能登 peninsula, Ishikawa-ken. Although undated, this edition is attributable to the Meiō period (1492-1501), since it was published as a tribute to Shōten 承天, appointed abbot of the Sōjiji in Meiō 3 明応三年, 1494 (see kanki no. 3 transcribed above). This was the earliest of all provincial editions (地方版) of this work, modelled on the Tōfukuji 東福寺 edition of late-Nanbokuchō period (late-14th century). The Hekiganroku, the most widely read and studied of all Zen compilations, was extensively published in Japan between the late-Nanbokuchō and late-Muromachi periods; no less than 16 editions are identified in GK, pp. 265-6. All of them are based on a Chinese exemplar of the early 14th century, of which the original title-page, prefaces and imprints are reprinted in the present copy.
Contents: A collection of 100 kōan 公案 selected by the Song monk Chongxian from the 1700 kōan contained in Keitoku dentōroku 景德傳燈錄, with commentary by the later Chan monk Yuanwu 圜悟, also known as Keqin 克勤.
