Imprint: [Kyōto] , Nakano Zesui, Kan'ei 18, 1641. Kanki on fol. 72b of maki 10 reads: 寛永十八辛巳年孟夏吉日 / 中野是誰.
Description: 10 kan, formerly in 10 satsu, now rebound in 2 vols. western style. (1) ff. 1. (目録), 20 (preface 序), 78 (maki 1-本文) ; (2) ff. [1] , 76; (3) ff. [1] , 64; (4) ff. [1] , 76; (5) ff. [1] , 62; (6) ff. [1] , 57; (7) ff. [1] , 52; (8) ff. [1] , 50; (9) ff. [1] , 63; (10) ff. [1] , 72. (Each maki is preceded by a 1-folio mokuroku.) 27.9 x 20.4 cm. Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 22.8 x 16.9 cm. Double-line borders. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin.
Katakana-majiri text, with interspersed passages in kanbun to which printed kunten, okurigana and kaeriten have been added. 15 lines to page, 28-31 characters to line.
Original dark brown front cover of maki 6 only (all others lost), with original printed title slip on left. Gedai: 碧巖集鈔・・・ 六. Title from naidai at head of each mokuroku 目録. Naidai at head of main text of each maki: Bukka engo zenji hekiganroku 佛果圓悟禪師碧巖錄. Hashiragaki: Hekigan shō 碧巖抄 + maki no. + folio no. In a modern western style half-leather binding.
Edition: This edition of Kan'ei 18 (1641) is listed in Kokusho sōmokuroku 国書総目録 under title Hekigan shō 碧巖鈔, in Bussho kaisetsu daijiten 仏書解説大辞典 and Shinzan zenseki mokuroku 新纂禅籍目録 under Hekiganshū shō 碧巖集鈔, and in Ryūkoku Catalogue (see below) under Hekiganroku shō 碧巖錄鈔, with name of compiler given as Kyōzan 夾山. According to Kokusho sōmokuroku 国書総目録, this edition was the earliest, followed by others in Keian 3 (1650) and Kanbun 9 (1669).
Contents: Japanese commentary on the Hekiganroku 碧巖錄 (Ch. Biyanlu), a Zen work by the Song monk Chongxian 重顯 consisting of 100 selected kōan 公案 with Chinese commentary.
