Author/compiler: Shanqing 善卿, Chan monk, also known as Muan 睦庵, 11th-12th century.
Imprint: [Kyōto] , Tawara Nizaemon, Shōhō 4, 1647. Kanki added on last page of maki 8 reads: 正保四歳正月吉日二条通鶴屋町田原仁左衛門梓行.
Description: 8 kan, formerly in 4 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. 26.3 x 17.5 cm. Fukurotoji.
Renewed mid-brown front cover of satsu 1 only, embossed with a pattern of sea shells.
Renewed title slip (late Edo period) with manuscript gedai: 祖庭事苑. Title from naidai at head of each maki.
Edition: An Edo-period edition (1647), printed from re-cut blocks, based on earlier Gozan and movable type editions. Like the two undated Gozan editions (one printed at Nanzenji 南禪寺) published in the Nanbokuchō period (1333-92), the present edition is modelled on an earlier Chinese edition dated 1154, from which the following elements are reprinted in this copy: preface by 法英, kango (printed inkoku) ending with the date of publication 紹興甲戌 [=1154] 季夏重別刋行; batsu by 師鑒; and endnote (後序) by 紫雲. As well as the Gozan-ban, two undated movable type editions of this work were published in Genna 元和 and Kan'ei 寛永 periods.
