- Title:

- Scope & Content:
-
Variant title: Ise monogatari ketsugishō 伊勢物語闕疑抄
Author/compiler: Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yūsai) 細川藤孝 (幽齋), also known as Genshi 玄旨, 1534-1610.
Imprint: [Kyōto] , Niemon 仁右衞門 [Koyama Niemon 小山仁右衞門 ? ] , n.d. [Keichō / Genna period, c. 1600-20] . Kanki at end of maki 5 reads: 御幸町通二条 / 仁右衛門活板之. (N.b. The date Keichō2 慶長二年 (1597) at end of oku on last folio of maki 5, preceding the kanki, refers to the date when Nakanoin Michikatsu 中院通勝 finished copying the MS, not to the date of printing.)
Description: 5 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. Folios apparently unnumbered, but numbering is at inner edge of each folio verso, concealed by binding. 27.7 x 18.7 cm. Fukurotoji.
Movable type, but genealogical tables (系図) in maki 1 and 5 are printed from blocks. Printing frame 22.5 x 17 cm. No borders. No printed hanshin.
Hiragana-majiri text without printed furigana. 10 lines to page, 19-20 characters to line.
Original pale fawn front cover of satsu 1 only, decorated with a marbled (suminagashi 墨流し) design, within a western style half-leather binding. Blue title slip, centrally placed, with manuscript gedai: 闕疑抄. Title from naidai. Full title, Ise monogatari ketsugishō 伊勢物語闕疑抄, is not found in book.
Edition: First printed edition of this work, published by Niemon of Kyōto (probably identical with Koyama 小山 Niemon who published Setsuyōshū 節用集 in Keichō 15, 1610). In this copy the kanki quoted under Imprint above has been deleted with rough brush strokes. According to the oku preceding this kanki, Hōin Genshi 法印玄旨 (=Hosokawa Yūsai) completed the work in Bunroku 5 (1596) and Yasokusō Sonen 也足叟素然 (=Nakanoin Michikatsu) transcribed the work for printing in Keichō 2 (1597). This edition was followed by three variant movable type editions, all undated, in Kan'ei period, and by the first blockprinted edition in Kan'ei 11, 1634.
Contents: A detailed commentary on Ise monogatari, highly regarded in the Edo period as being more authoritative and expressed in simpler terms than earlier commentaries such as Ise monogatari gukenshō 伊勢物語愚見抄 and Ise monogatari Shōmonshō 伊勢物語肖聞抄.
