-
Author/compiler: Compiled by a committee appointed by Emperor Kanmu 桓武, including Fujiwara no Tsugutada 藤原繼繩 and Sugano no Mamichi 菅野眞道.
Imprint: N.p., Meireki 3, 1657. Batsu on last 2 folios following maki 40 ends with date of original publication, 明暦丁酉秋日, and name of reviser, Tatsuno Harutoki 立野春節. But the appended page of publisher's advertisements makes it clear that this copy is a late reprint, probably from the original blocks, issued by Izumoji Shōhakudō 出雲寺松栢堂 of Kyōto in late-Edo period, possibly in Tenpō 14 (1843).
Description: 40 kan, formerly in 20 satsu, now rebound in 2 vols. western style. 25.3 x 18.3 cm. (vol. 1) ; 25.1 × 18.3 cm. (vol. 2). Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 20.8 x 16.5 cm. (average). Double-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin.
Kanbun text, with printed kunten, kaeriten and kutōten. 8 lines to page, 18 characters to line.
Dark blue front covers (late-Edo period) of satsu 1 and 11 only. Printed title slips of same period, with gedai: 續日本紀. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Shoku Nihongi 續日本紀 + maki no. + folio no.
Edition: First published in Meireki 3, 1657. The present copy seems to be a straight reprint from the original blocks of 1657.
Contents: Second, after Nihon shoki 日本書紀, of the six official histories of early Japan (Rikkokushi - 六國史), compiled by imperial order and presented to Emperor Kanmu in 794. Covers the period 697-791. Shoku Nihongi is regarded as the most reliable primary source for the history of the Nara period.
