- Arrangement:

This material has been largely arranged according to the chronological order of de Coëtlogon's career.
At lower levels an attempt has been made to preserve the collection's original order by maintaining the grouping of some papers, as this did not conflict with the chronological arrangement.
- Administrative Context:
-
The British were drawn into Egyptian affairs by the bankrupting of the Cairo government in 1878 and the strategic importance of the new Suez Canal. The British Government bought up the remaining shares of the canal and, together with the French, worked to stabilise Egyptian debt. The British majority control of the canal gave them power over Egypt, effectively transforming it into a client state, even though the country officially remained a part of the Ottoman Empire.
This increased British control coincided with the rise of the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmed ‘ibn Abdullah, who had gathered an army of rebels in Sudan, declaring war with Egypt in 1881 and proclaiming a jihad against their Turkish overlords.
In response the Egyptian ruler, Khedive Tewfik, decided to launch an overwhelming offensive to take back Sudan, appointing Colonel William Hicks in 1883 as commander of 7000 Egyptian troops. De Coetlogon received an appointment in Hicks’ staff and the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
