Two letters from Thomas Machell, Rooderpore Factory, Bongong, Bengal, to Mrs John Ditmas, Minister Yard, York, England, describing his life in India as manager of the indigo estate. The letters are dated 12th November 1850 and 1st December 1851.
The 1850 letter is illustrated with small sketches of the voyage out to India (including Madeira, Tenerife, a whale, the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon, Bay of Bengal), and scenes of India. The 1851 letter is illustrated with a sketch of a large two storey building, possibly at Rooderpore Factory.
