Scope & Content:

This is an Ottoman Turkish translation and commentary of the Delailü’l-hayrat, the famous Arabic compilation of invocations of blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad, authored by Muhammed ibn-i Süleyman el-Cezuli (Muhammad b. Sulaymān al-Jazūlī) (died 870 AH/1465 CE). The commentator and translator is Karadavudzade Mehmed Efendi (died 1170 AH/1756 CE).

Karadavudzade’s commentary of the Delail was the most well-known and popular such work in Ottoman Turkish in the Ottoman world. The commentary is organised in eight parts, preceded by an introduction. Karadavudzade’s commentary is extensive, and he enriches el-Cezuli’s transmitted prayers with ruminations on a host of different topics, and cites a range of stories and mystical legends. At least fifteen editions of the work were later printed in the period between 1254-1330 AH (1838-1912 CE).

The colophon is on f 316r, and identifies the copyist as Molla İbrahim ibn-i Molla Mehmed Kastalan. Dated ‘R A’ (Rebiyülevvel) 1227 AH/March-April 1812 CE.
