Scope & Content:

This volume contains the collected poems and selected prose writings of Bandırmalızade Mustafa Haşim Efendi (1130-1197 AH/1718-1783 CE), known also as Haşim Baba. The young Haşim was raised and educated in the Celveti order in which his father was a sheikh. However, Haşim was himself more inclined to the Bektaşi order, and thus became affiliated with Hasan Baba (died 1170 AH/1756 CE), sheikh of the Kaygusuz Abdal Bektaşi Tekke in Cairo. He was thus influenced significantly by both the Celvetiye and Bektaşiye, even if neither group were fully convinced by him or his ideas. After Haşim’s death, his followers established the Haşimiye branch of the Celvetiye in his native Üsküdar.

Haşim Baba authored four main works, of which the present volume contains two: Divan and Varidat. Its contents are as follows:

1r-4r: Preface
4r-7v(?): Na’tılar
7v-50r: kasideler and gazeller
50r-56v: Terciler etc
56v-59v?: Varidat
59v-60r: Tetimme-i bahriye
60r-v: Rübaiyat-i Hazret-i Pir
60v-61v: Efrat
61v-76v: Writings on Sufism, including one dated 5 Şaban 1161 AH/July 31 1748 CE (75r) and another 1150 AH/1737-8 CE (f 76v).

The colophon on 76v carries the date 1150 AH, however this is a date of composition, as the later date of 26 Ramazan 1176 AH / 10 April 1763 CE can be found on 56v. This itself may be the date of composition of the Varidat.

Haşim Baba's Divan was published in Istanbul (1252 AH/1836 CE) as Dîvân-ı Hâşim Efendi, though with significant errors. For a more recent critical edition see: Haşim Baba, Bandırmalızâde Haşim Baba divanı, edited by Mehmet Akif Yalçınkaya (Ankara: Grafiker, 2015).
