This volume contains a mid-thirteen century AH (nineteenth century CE) treatise on the significance and inner meanings of the invocation Bismillâhirrahmânirrahîm (‘In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate’), known as the besmele or tesmiye. Its author is Abdülfettah Niyazi ibn-i Hüseyin Hilmi (?) Adanavi (of Adana).
The work, which cannot be traced in published catalogues, is divided into five sections (feride). Numerous points of doctrine are raised and the text is rich in quotations from the Qur’an, hadith, and theological works. After the treatise proper there is another passage in Arabic (ff 12v-13r), dedicating it, or this copy, to the statesman Saffet Mehmed Esad Paşa (1230-1301 AH/1814-1883 CE).
A rococo headpiece in gold, blue, green, red, and black is found on f 2v, and ff 12v-13r feature gold roundels. The author introduces himself and his work in a preface in Arabic on ff 2v-3r. The colophon, which is on f 12v, gives the date of composition as 15 Muharrem 1261 AH/24 January 1845 CE. This may also be the date of copying.
