- Title:
- [Divan-i Hayreti] – [ديوان حيرتي]
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains the Divan of the Sufi poet Hayreti (died 941 AH/1534 CE). He was born in Giannitsa (Turkish. Vardar Yenicesi) in northern Greece and given the name Mehmed. Both he and his brother, the Mevlevi şeyh Yusuf-ı Sineçak, were disciples of Şeyh İbrâhim Gülşenî. Hayreti later became more inclined toward the Bektashi order, having spent time with the Abdalan-ı Rum. He mixed with other poets of the period in the cultural centers of the time, such as Giannitsa, Skopje, and Belgrade. He is also known to have travelled to Istanbul and presented a bahariyye to Grand Vizier Makbul İbrahim Paşa. Having failed to attain a sufficient reward from the Paşa, he returned to Giannitsa and lived the rest of his life in the protection of the Mihaloğlu and Yahyalı akıncı corps. He is buried with his brother in Giannitsa.
Though skilled in the use of poetic harmonies, meters, and mazmunlar, Hayreti is perhaps best represented by his poetry in the dervişane and rindane styles. He possessed a rich vocabulary and made use of various idioms in his work. His poetical style has been described as sincere and simple (Tatcı, ‘Hayretî’). Hayreti's Divan is a lengthy collection of poetry which enjoyed broad societal appeal in the tenth century AH/sixteenth century CE. In accordance with the classical order of divanlar, it begins with a tevhid and nat. These are followed by kasideler, musammatlar, müstezadlar, gazeller, and kıtalar.
Begins:
Dehenin fikriyle Hakk bilir o safha ‘âc * aklımda komadı nerede kader-ı istihrac
Ends: Yıllar idi sakinidim gülistan-i Yar’da * Hemnişinem bülbül iken şimdi zağ olmak ne kuh
The present manuscript lacks the first folio, and there appears to be a lacuna following f 44. Other contents of this volume include a short list of Persian compound words on f 1r, miscellaneous verses in Arabic and scribbles on 2r, a mystical gazel on 2v, two ghazals by Mesihi on 3r (these are misplaced and should perhaps follow f 108), mystical verses in Turkish on 109r-v, letters of the alphabet with their ebced values on 110v, and in the margins of several folios, verses and assorted scribbles.
Through the copy is undated, it is likely from around the 12th century AH/18th century CE.
