This volume contains poetical works by the celebrated scholar, Sufi, and poet İbrahim Hakkı Erzurumi (1115-1194 AH/1703-1780 CE). Renowned in his lifetime for his piety, Hakkı was one of the great Ottoman mystical poets. In addition to his poetry, he also composed the Marifetname, a well-known compendium of scientific learning that also includes traditional Islamic lore.
The poetical works included in this volume are the Divan (which constitutes the bulk of the contents), Tertibü’l-ulum, and Tefvizname. The entire volume has been copied in the same hand. There are also a small number of sections in prose, as well as a small number of works in Arabic. The Arabic colophon to the Divan on 100v states that the work was completed ‘at or by the hand’ (‘alā yadd) of İbrahim Hakkı for his son İsmail in 1168 AH (1754-5 CE). The Arabic colophon to the Tertibü’l-ulum on 104r states the same, but uses the prayer ‘May God have Mercy on him’ for İbrahim Hakkı, suggesting that the work was copied after 1194 AH/1780 CE. The prayer ‘May God preserve him’ is used for İsmail, as well as a host of praises, suggesting that the scribe was personally acquainted with İbrahim Hakkı’s son (the latter’s death date is not known). The phrase ‘alā yadd may simply suggest that the scribe was directly quoting an autograph copy, or was simply emphasising İbrahim Hakkı’s authorship of the works in question.
(1) Divan-i İbrahim Hakkı, known also as İlahiname, ff 1v-100v
İbrahim Hakkı compiled his Divan in 1168 AH/1755 CE for his son, student, and spiritual disciple İsmail Fehmi. Its content is dominated by themes such as Divine love, the heart, Prophetic custom, advice on spiritual and religious issues, and God’s attributes and their manifestation in His creation. The present copy is organised as follows: one münacat, 1v-3r; eight kaside, 3r-11r; Aşkname, 11r-12v; naatu’n-Nebi, 12v-13v; vasf-i halih, 13v; İlahiname-i İbrahim Hakkı (consists of gazeliyat beginning with elif), 13v-88r; musaddas, 88r-89r; six muhammesat, 89r-92v; gazel, ma‘iyyat, manalar, kıtalar, müfredat, rubaiyat, 92v-100v. The latter section is divided into spiritual themes as follows: Medhi’l-ma, 92v; el-Munacat, 94v; Marifeti’l-ilm, 95r; Marifeti’n-nefs, 96r; Kılletu’l-ekl ve’n-nevm, 98r; ‘Uzle ‘ani’n-nas 99r.
Begins:
… Ey Malik-i mülk-i dü cihan Vahit Kahhar * yoktur Sana sani / Sen daim ü bakisin ü yok darda deyyar * eşya heme fani
Ends:
Çün seksen iki rubai yazdı hame * Hakkı dedi namını saadet name / bin sal ü yüz altmış sekiz salında / Hatm oldu bu nazm irişdi hoş encama
(2) Tertibü’l-ulum, 100v-104r
Composed in 1165 AH/1752 CE, the Tertibü’l-ulum was İbrahim Hakkı’s first work of poetry in Ottoman Turkish. It proposes a new curriculum for students and is organised in twelve bablar, each dedicated to one discipline:
İlm’e delalet, 101r-101v; Icmal-i âlet, 101v; Kuran u hat, 101v-102r; Fıkıh u lügat, 102r; Tasrif, 102r; Nahv, 102v; Mantık, 102v; Adab-ı ilm, 102v; İlm-i maâni, 103r; Hikmet, 103r; Cüz’iyat, 103r-103v; Usul-i fıkıh
The selection of discipline reflects his own broad interests, each of which would go on to be well-represented in his famous Marifetname.
Begins:
… Der Hakkı yazdım mevzun u kitabi * Derec ettim onda on iki babı / Evvelki bab ilme delalet * ikinci babı icmal-i alatı
Ends:
Ne gelse bil onu Haktan kabul kıl Hakkı * Ki hayır odur ki Sana vaki o himme-i hali
(3) Tevfizu’l-umur or Tevfizname, 104r-105v
The Tevfizis a manzume by Hakkı on the fundamentals of irfan (spiritual knowledge and cognition).
Begins:
Hak şerleri hayr eyler * Zannetme ki gayr eyler / Bilen onu seyr eyler / Mevlâ görelim neyler
Ends:
Aklam-ı hak ey Hakkı * Öğren edep ve huluki / Allah görelim neyler * Neylerse güzel eyler
