This volume contains parts 2 and 3 of atale in Old Anatolian Turkish recounting the adventures of the heroGerdenkeşan. Gerdenkeşanname, like the Kahramanname, Destan-iKiran-i Habeşi, and others, is one of the narratives that grew around theperiphery of the Persian Shāhnāma of Firdawsī (329–411 AH/940–1020 CE). Likethem, too, it is popularly attributed to Ebu Tahir Musa et-Tartusi (Rieu, CTM,220).
In this version of the text, theauthor explains in his epilogue (ff 342v-343r) that the sequel to this storycan be read in another lengthy tale entitled Huşengname.
The orthography of the currentvolume is idiosyncratic, often reminiscent of Old Anatolian Turkish, althoughnot in its entirety. There is a high frequency of variation in the use ofvowels in the copula and in suffixes, and long a’s are occasionally marked wordinternally with an elif madde. The occasional presence of the form yoxsa pointsto potential Azerbaijani or East Anatolian Turkish influences.
A partial version of the samework, from a different manuscript set, can be found in Or 16049. That versionis incomplete at the beginning and end, and there is a lacuna between ff 4-5.In addition, the writing is unclear and often difficult to decipher owing tothe unusual forms of some letters and ligatures.
