Leaves from the manuscript of Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott
- Scope & Content:
-
Two folios of the autograph manuscript of Kenilworth, numbered 16 and 17 by Scott, with insertions and corrections on the versos. The two folios belong to chapter four of volume II of the manuscript, the greater part of which is found at Egerton MS 1661.
The text begins halfway through chapter four of volume II with the words of Queen Elizabeth: 'and Leicester I beg you once more your hands and Gods death he that refuses shall taste of our Tower-fare ere he see our face again.' It ends with the words: 'He summoned himself hastily together and prepared to play his part in the scene which was like to ensue when as he judged from the glances which the Queen threw towards him Varney’s communication be they what they might'.
