Unpublished manuscript travel journal of Dawson Turner (1775-1858) written in the hand of Mary Turner (1774-1850), Dawson's wife, documenting a three weeks' tour taken with portrait artist Thomas Phillips (1770-1845), travelling through France in the autumn of 1815. Turner travels from London to Brighton and Newhaven and then through Dieppe, Rouen, and Paris before returning to England via Calais.
The volume contains approximately 86 illustrations, including 48 original drawings and 38 etchings and engravings. 20 identified as by Thomas Phillips, with others identified as by artists including John Sell Cotman, Alexander von Humbolt, J Scott, and etchings by Mary Turner herself.
Additional inserts include:
A page from the ‘Illustrated London News’ dated 18 February 1845 with illustrations of Brighton Pavilion in between folios 5 and 6, a printed pamphlet for ‘Diorama, Regents Park’ advertising ‘Two views: Interior of the chapel of Roslyn and the City of Rouen’ between folios 14 and 15, two fold-out printed maps, one showing the route from Paris to Rouen via Vernon, the other the route to Rouen via Pontoise and Magny between folios 20 and 21, and a selection of embossed calling cards on f. 83v.
Further inserts towards the end of the volume include Dawson Turner's folio passport completed in manuscript and dated 28 September 1815, a large folding printed menu for Legaque, Restaurateur, rue de Rivoli, No. 7 with manuscript amendments to dishes and prices, a printed list of the works of ancient art which were taken from Rome by the French in 1797 and carried to Paris, and a manuscript appendix giving the state of the picture gallery of the Louvre in 1816.
