- Title:
- Letter from Thomas Stickney, abbot of Revesby, to the Cistercian Abbot General
- Scope & Content:
-
A letter written by Thomas Stickney (fl. 1504-1532), abbot of Revesby to the Cistercian Abbot General and delivered by Richard Kytheby, abbot of Vaudey from 1508 to 1510. The abbot general at this time was Jacques de Theuley de Pontailler. Stickney writes to him about an unspecified complaint he has made against the abbot of Fountains Abbey. The abbot is unnamed but would have been Marmaduke Huby, abbot from 1495 to 1526. Stickney says that he has amended his complaint under pressure from Huby and makes a new complaint against conspirators that Huby has appointed at Fountains, before asking to meet with the Abbot General after Easter. Dated Revesby, St Benedict’s Day [21 March].
Endorsed: in a later hand, ‘A l[ett]re frome the abbott of Revebsy unto the visitor of theire house / very Eloquent [and] Rethoricall', and in the original hand, 'Suo reverendi[ssim]o p[at]ri d[omi]no ac Do[m]pn[i]o abba[t]i gen[er]ali reformatori’.
