- Scope & Content:
-
Four signed autograph letters from John Ruskin to George Jones (artist, executor to J. M. W. Turner, and Keeper of the Royal Academy). Two letters are fully dated, one letter lacks a year date, and the other is without date, as follows:
(1). Denmark Hill. 24 September 1850. Letter refers to 'the blue drawings in Marlborough House'. (1 sheet folded)
(2). Bonneville, Savoy. 3 June 1860. Letter refers to the publication (1860) of the fifth volume of Ruskin's Modern Painters. 'But it is my hope, before I die, to be able in many profounder and more extended ways to illustrate Turner's work and character. My effectual labour for him is now, to the best of my judgement but beginning.' (1 sheet folded)
(3). Denmark Hill. 2 September. Brief letter accompanying the gift of a basket of fruit. (1 sheet)
(4). Undated letter asking if Peter Bayne, of Bloomsbury, can be given access to 'the shut up Turners' at the Royal Academy. 'Mr Bayne is one of the most accurate thinkers of the day, & his philosophical works will, I doubt not, soon have extended influence.' (1 sheet folded)
