- Eleven letters, mostly from Lieutenant Thomas Farmer of 23rd Regiment Royal Welsh Fusiliers, to his brothers Edward and Richard regarding his experience of the Peninsular War. Letter to Edward from Annapolis in Maryland, dated 27 Sep 1809, regarding a lack of letters of response from family and friends, and preparations to travel to New Brunswick for a war with America. Letter to Edward from Lisbon, dated 15 Nov 1810, in which he discusses the rumoured sizes of the armies, describes how his regiment fits into the army, and reports rumours of a French retreat. Letter to Richard from Azambuja, dated 26 Dec 1810, decrying his lack of letters, and reporting a stalemate between the forces. Letter to Edward from Azambuja, dated 11 Jan 1811, requesting family opinion on applying for promotion in the Portuguese army, due to his financial difficulties. Letter to Edward from Espinhal, dated 15 Mar 1811, describing the British pursuit of the French army to Redinha and the resulting battle. Letter to Edward from Elood? , dated 3 Apr 1811, describing a skirmish with the enemy at Campo Maior and criticising the actions of Marshall Beresford. This letter also describes the local area and army conditions. Letter to Edward from a camp outside Badajoz, dated 24 Mar 1812, describing preparations for the siege and casualties from a sortie by the defenders. Letter to Edward from camp on road to Vallidolid, dated 30 Jun 1812, describing his return to the regiment following a wound and Lord Wellington’s manoeuvres at Salamanca. Letter to Edward, regarding borrowing money, and including a drawing of the coat of arms and motto for Lord Gosford. Letter to Edward, from an army paymaster, dated Feb 28 1816?, regarding the personal effects of the late Captain Farmer. Letter to Edward from John Enoch, dated 27 May 1816, regarding prize money due to Captain Farmer according to his rank and months worked.
