- Scope & Content:
- Letters from Francis Drake as minister in Munich to diplomat Charles Stuart as secretary of legislation in Vienna. These letters convey information about troop movements and political alliances and include some sections in cipher and some copies of official correspondence. Letter No 6, dated 1 Nov 1803, originally enclosing copies of a letter from Bonaparte which had been republished in Germany, and a packet for forwarding to Mr Stratton at Constantinople. Letter No. 11, dated 9 Dec 1803, discussing the irregularity of the post and enclosing an extract from an official letter in cipher. Letter, dated 9 Dec 1803, regarding Count Mainberts, the status of the French army, and relations between the Imperial houses. Letter No. 1, dated 17 Jan-15 Feb 1804, regarding the French Equestrian order and its purpose. This letter also conveys rumours of an engagement off the coast of Provence and discusses the conduct of French minister at Stuttgart. Letter dated 18 Jan-8 Feb 1804, regarding Count Antraigues and the First Consul’s attempts to remove him from the Russian missions in Dresden. Letter No. 11, dated 16 Mar 1804, regarding rumours conveyed to the Court of Russia. This letter includes section in cypher with interlinear transcription regarding French proposals rejected by the King of Sweden. An extract from a letter, dated 22 Mar 1804, regarding arrests by French agents of persons in Munich, and troop movements to seize French emigrants in Baden. Letter No. 12, dated 23 Mar 1804, confirming receipt of letter and copy of dispatch, and originally enclosing a petition on behalf of Charles Stuart for refuge for himself and other officers. Letter to Charles Stuart, dated 24 Mar 1804, from Alexander Horne, regarding official documents concerning the arrest of émigrés at Offenburg and accusations the British Emissaries were conveying traitorous correspondence. An undated letter regarding a message from the police concerning a servant and the distribution of some pamphlets.
