- Title:
- Book of Poems by Sophia Bonnell and Friends
- Scope & Content:
-
A book of manuscript poems, written predominantly by Sophia Mary Jane Bonnell in her own hand, and signed variously "JB", "Jane Bonnell" or "Sophia." A typed label on the cover describes this as "A Book of Souvenirs containing Poems written by Sophia Jane Bonnell between 1801 and 1820", though the poems describe events as far back as 1781 and the latest poem is dated to 1835.
The majority of the poems describe or relate to domestic events, such as the death of a cow, visits to other towns and villages, Sophia's relationship with her husband, James, or are written as gifts, tributes or epitaphs to Sophia's friends and family. A few relate to more political or national events, such as a stone being thrown at the King's carriage, Sophia's desire to be the first woman to ride in a hot air balloon, the death of Thomas Gainsborough, or the execution of the Reverend James Hackman.
A few poems are written in a different hand and signed by a Miss Ellen Piers. The volume also includes a few small newspaper cuttings of verses, not visibly to Sophia Bonnell or her circle, and an index of the poems included in the book.
