Anonymous Notes and Extracts on the Ideal Education of a Daughter
- Scope & Content:
-
Pocketbook containing an anonymous handwritten account of the author's plans and thoughts on the ideal upbringing and education of a daughter. The account describes both the traits the author considers desirable for his daughter to acquire, including truthfulness, humility, courtesy, grace and refinement, as well as the accomplishments he hopes her to attain, covering a good standard of education, the ability to play music, sing and draw, cleanliness, and good horsemanship.
The account also considers the difficulties of balancing the needs of the parent with the needs of the child, as well as those involved in imbuing virtues without going overboard. The author's intent varies across the account, alternating between his desires for his own daughter and his thoughts and plans for the education of girls more generally.
The text also includes transcriptions of extracts from other texts the author thought useful to the upbringing of a daughter, lists of books for the daughter to read and plans for her education between the ages of 7 and 18.
