- Scope & Content:
- A letter from Queen Victoria to Tennyson, dated 12 Jul 1885, thanking him for his poem celebrating the marriage of Princess Beatrice, and requesting that Tennyson use his influence to dissuade William Gladstone from running in the next general election. Her letter also asks Tennyson if he has read General Gordon's diary, and bemoans the fall of Khartoum. This folder also includes a draft letter of reply from Tennyson to Queen Victoria, dated 20 Jul 1885, promising to talk to Gladstone, but making it clear that he feels unlikely to succeed.
