- Three letters from John Cowell to his mother describing his tour of Jersusalem and the Holy Land as tutor to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. Letter from Jerusalem, dated 28 Mar 1859, describing journey, mentioning the sights visited in the city and surrounding countryside, and making arrangements for the purchase of some land. Letter from near the Sea of Galilee, dated 4 Apr 1859, wishing his mother a happy birthday, conveying news from friends and family, and discussing when he’ll return home and where they will visit next. Letter, dated 14 Apr 1859, discussing areas of the Holy Land they have visited and their voyage up the coast, conveying news from family and friends. The letters include a double-sided page of sketches of views of the Holy Land, and a page of envelopes containing olive leaves collected during the trip.
