- Title:
- Diary of W R Bevan recording a journey to Namibia
- Scope & Content:
- Single volume diary describing the journey of W R Bevan, mining engineer, to Damaraland (now central Namibia) as part of the South West Africa Expedition. The diary starts on 6 Jun 1900 with Bevan's arrival in Southampton from Swansea where he met the other expedition members, whose names are listed on the first page of the diary; they sailed on 7 Jun on the steamship, SS Gelph. The ship visited at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on 13 Jun for a day. Bevan describes the entertainments on they voyage, including a ceremony to celebrate crossing the Equator on 20 Jun, with an address to Neptune recorded in the diary and Crossing the Line certificate enclosed at the end of the volume. Landed on 28 Jun at Swakopmund, Namibia, and moved into a local hotel; Bevan gives first impressions of the country and locals. On 5 July the journey progressed by train to Jackal Water and Bevan details the conditions of the journey and the extent of the town. They began to trek on 10 Jul by wagon train, and Bevan describes the conditions of the journey in detail with regular temperature readings. Arrived at Omaruru on 18 Jul, for a rest and resupply, before continuing the trek on the evening of the 19 Jul. On 26 Jul, Tom Hodge left the wagons to hunt for game, but did not reappear. Bevan describes the search on the following days until Tom was found on the 29 Jul. The journey continued once Hodge recovered. Short stay in Otavi from 8-10 Aug. Bevan and the expedition finally arrived at Tsumeb on 15 Aug and began preparations to start work. From 18 Aug Bevan commenced work making tools for the miners. Bevan stopped writing his diary soon after their arrival. This diary includes some negative descriptions of the native people helping to support the expedition. The volume also encloses a letter from Henry Carey Baird & Co, Industrial Publishers, dated 5 Aug 1895, advising on books about ammonia and refrigeration.
