Order for a Survey of the King's Wardrobe, signed 21 May 1661, following the disruption of the Civil War.
The document instructs the Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household, Edward Earl of Manchester, and Vice Chamberlain Sir George Carteret to perform an extensive survey of the Wardrobe.
In this work they were to be supported by with the secretaries of state, Sir Edward Nicholas and Sir William Morrice; the royal Treasurer, Frederick Lord Cornwallis; the Knight Comptroller, Sir Charles Barkley; and the Clerk of the Wardrobes, Lancelot Thornton; and one of the Gentlemen Ushers of the Privy Chamber, Sir William Killigrew.
These commissioners were given authority to demand reparations for losses revealed during their survey from the managers of the King's properties.

In this period the Royal Wardrobe referred to the goods belonging to the Crown as well as the physical place. Therefore this survey was probably ordered to reveal the state of the King's possessions following the chaos of the Civil War and the reign of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector.
