Order issued by the privy council on behalf of Queen Anne demanding Scottish and catholic oaths of allegiance to the Crown, dated 18 Jan 1704.
The order is addressed to Thomas Herbert, Lord Lieutentant of Wiltshire and Monmouth, 8th Earl of Pembroke and Lord President of the Privy Council, and follows the passing of the Alien Act. This document orders officers of the militia to demand oaths of allegiance to the Crown from known and suspected papists or else confiscate their arms and horses.
This document is signed by the 8 members of the Privy Council: Charles Seymour, Duke of Somerset; John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham; Sidney Godolphin; Montagu Venables-Bertie, Earl of Abingdon; Henry Grey, Duke of Kent; Thomas Mansel; Sir Charles Hedges; and Colonel John Granville.
