- Title:
- Facsimile of a 1799 letter from Napoleon Bonaparte to Joseph Bonaparte
- Scope & Content:
- Contains a facsimile of Bonaparte's letter to his brother, Joseph, deputy to the Council of the 500, dated Cairo, 7 Thermidor [27 Jul 1799], with a translation. Bonaparte refers to the conquest of Egypt, adding 'a page to the military glory of this army.' However, he notes there is no money to pay the troops and refers to his 'great many domestic worries' and sees Joseph as his only remaining ally. Bonaparte writes that he is looking forward to shutting himself away for winter and to some 'solitude and isolation'. Also contains a copy of the Weekly Dispatch, 27 Sep 1801, with an editorial referring to Anglo-French negotiations and the threat of a French invasion of Britain, and an envelope with notes on the dating of the letter.

- User Conditions:
- Custodial History:
- The material was donated to Powys Record Office by Iona Seymour of Howey in 2010. Powys RO passed it to TNA with authority to dispose of it as TNA saw fit.
- Former Internal References:
- Dep. 10799
- Source of Acquisition:
- Transferred from The National Archives, June 2014.
- Administrative Context:
- The dating of 1799 is supported by the fact that the Egypt campaign was 1798-1799 and the Council of the 500 was dissolved on 10 Nov 1799. The paper used for the facsimile shows a watermark of 'John Hall 1805' but this is likely to be a number used to identify the type of paper rather than a date.
