- Title:
- Lord Chamberlain's Correspondence Files, 1900-1968
- Scope & Content:
- Until 1968, all plays intended for public performance within the UK had to be submitted to the Lord Chamberlain's Office for examination and licensing. Most plays submitted for licensing between 1900 and 1968 were given a corresponding report that summarised the play's assessment by the Examiner. These reports form the Lord Chamberlain's Correspondence Files. Each file an Examiner's report summarising the play, expressing opinions on the play's merits or demerits and advising whether or not it should be licensed. Files also contain details of any changes to be made to the script demanded by the Examiner and associated correspondence with theatre management where relevant. The Lord Chamberlain's Correspondence Files are not yet fully catalogued. Readers can access details and the shelfmarks of the Lord Chamberlain's Correspondence Files through the card index in the Manuscripts Reading Room, British Library.
