Diary kept by Thomas Patterson, an engineer working in the Tarr Farm Oil Field in Pennsylvania in 1873. The diary primarily describes Patterson's work as a mining engineer on the oil wells of the area, including the operation of oil wells, the dismantling of old derricks, and repair work on malfunctioning drills. The diary also describes his household chores and preparations, his travels on foot and by rail around the area, observations of the weather, and his contacts with others working in and around the oil field.
The diary also includes a section for memoranda and accounts, used by Patterson to keep track of his expenditures and plans.
Also included with the diary are five loose sheets: a receipt for a registered letter and a receipt for a telegram, both to John Cattrell, Patterson's tax receipt for 1872, a receipt for a bill of lading, and a telegram from R H Mitchell. Most of these have also been used as scrap paper by Patterson for calculation and record-keeping.
