- Scope & Content:
- A series of fourteen letters sent by William Sykes, army chaplain, to his brother, Thomas Sykes detailing his work as a volunteer chaplain during the Crimean War. These letters provide a detailed insight into the daily work of an army chaplain during this conflict, as well as the changing morale and behaviour of the troops. This folder also includes several letters from Thomas Sykes to his mother and friends recording his visit to his brother, William, with his friend Henry as "travelling gentlemen" to witness the war. These letters describe their voyage, including visits to Malta and Constantinople, and include a pencil sketch on a postcard of a view of the camp from William's tent.
