- Title:
- Volume of divisions for bass viol by Daniel Norcombe, Christopher Simpson, William Young and others
- Scope & Content:
-
The first half of this volume (ff. 1-33v) contains sets of divisions for solo bass viol by Daniel Norcombe (17 sets) and Christopher Simpson (3 sets), as well as the Ground by 'Pole Wheele' (ff. 29v-30r). A further 15 unattributed pieces include two identified in a later hand as being by William Young (f. 33v) and another as 'Tregian's Ground' (ff. 26v-27r).
Reversed, the volume contains songs and poems in English, often with political or overtly Royalist themes. The songs contain a melody line and sometimes a bass too, together with the text. Mention of 'King James & Queen Mary' in one of the songs suggests a date after 1685 for this portion of the manuscript, although the pieces for bass viol are thought to have been copied several decades earlier.
The volume was acquired by Arnold Dolmetsch in 1898 and a number of annotations by him appear throughout the volume, including at the front, where pasted on slips include provenance information.
This volume formed part of the Dolmetsch Library and previously carried the reference: II C 24. It was part of the portion of the library sold at Sotheby's in September 2021.
For a volume of lute music also from the Dolmetsch Library, see MS Mus. 1868.
