- Scope & Content:
- Anonymous manuscript journal describing a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, and the surrounding area, shortly after the Peninsular War. The journal describes religious festivals and processions, local sites and customs, and includes some ink and watercolour sketches of the processions and some architectural features. It includes a detailed description of a visit to the royal hospital of Sao Jose and the villages of Queluz and Sintra. The middle section of the volume is blank apart from a precise ink drawing of a row of five storey town houses. The second part of the volume contains a description of the American navy and the American attitude to commerce and includes a watercolour sketch of a naval battle involving HM Packet 'Francis Freeling'.
