Sluices with inscriptions installed in ancient irrigation tanks between 6th and 16th century CE in Tamil Nadu transformed the entire landscape of the command area of the tank and also brought wider uncultivated area under cultivation leading to comfortable food production. The sustainable food production changed the social structure paving a way for new social groups. The emergence of new settlements and construction of temples (both Jain and Hindu) created a new social order. The study of sluice inscriptions provides a glimpse on technology oriented water management and the social process that happened due to the introduction of new technology. It provides an ample scope to understand the history, irrigational techniques, water management, social structure, rituals and many other cultural aspects associated with the sluices. The sluice technology is one of the viable and cost effective technologies of the ancient times as this technology is patronised by the society for more than thousand years and it is still being practiced in certain tanks reflecting the technological viability. The documentation, decipherment and digitisation of the tanks, sluices and inscriptions provide an ample scope to understand the historical context and the history of science and technology.60 sites were visited as part of this project and they have been catalogued as follows:

பண்டைய நீர் பாசன குளங்களில் காணப்படும் பொ.ஆ. ஆறாம் நூற்றாண்டுக்கும் பதினாறாம் நூற்றாண்டுக்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலத்தைச் சார்ந்த கல்வெட்டுகளுடன் கூடிய குமிழிகள் அக்குளத்தின் நீர்பாசன பகுதிக்கு உட்பட்ட நிலத்தின் தன்மையை முழுவதுமாக மாற்றி அக்குளத்தின் கீழ் அமைந்த பரந்த நிலப்பரப்பை விளை நிலமாக மாற்றியதன் மூலம் தேவையான உணவு உற்பத்தியை பெருக்க முடிந்தது. இவ் உணவு உற்பத்தி சமூக அமைப்பை மாற்றியதுடன் புதிய சமூக அமைப்பு தோன்றவும் வழிவகை செய்தன. புதிய குடியிருப்புகளின் தோற்றமும், கோயில்களின் தோற்றமும் (சமணம் மற்றும் இந்து) புதிய சமூக அமைப்பு தோன்ற வழி வகுத்தன. குமுழி கல்வெட்டுகளை படிப்பதன் மூலம் தொழில்நுட்பத்துடன் கூடிய நீர்பாசன நிர்வாகத்தையும் அதனால் ஏற்பட்ட சமூக மாற்றங்களயும் உய்த்துணரலாம். இவை வரலாறு, நீர்பாசன தொழில்நுட்பம், நீர்நிர்வாகம், சமூக கட்டமைப்பு, சடங்குகள் மற்றும் பிற பண்பாட்டு நிகழ்வுகளை அறிந்து கொள்ள வகை செய்கிறது. குமிழி தொழில்நுட்பம் மிகக்குறந்த செலவில் நீண்ட நாள் நிலைத்து நிற்கக்கூடியது ஆகும். இக் குமிழி தொழிநுட்பம் ஏறத்தாழ ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாக பயன்பாட்டில் இருப்பது இத்தொழில்நுட்பத்தின் நிலைத்த நம்பகத்தன்மையை காட்டுகிறது. எனவே, குளங்களயும், குமிழிகளையும், குமிழி கல்வெட்டுகளையும் ஆவணப்படுத்துதல் மூலம் பண்டைய அறிவியல் மற்றும் தொழிநுட்பத்தின் வரலாற்றை அதன் வரலாற்று சூழல் பின்னணியில் இருந்து உணரலாம்.
