Letters, Izadbakhsh Rasa
Contents
1 copy of a work by Īzad Bakhsh "Rasā"
Untitled collection of official and private letters of the statesman flourishing in the reign of the Timurid or Mughal Emperor ʿĀlamgīr I, by the author whose full name is Mīrzā Īzad Bakhsh (takhalluṣ "Rasā") ibn Āqā Mullā ibn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn ibn Āṣaf Khān Jaʿfar Ṣiddīqī Qazvīnī (according to Ethé, d. 1119/1707-8), a distant relative of the emperor through his maternal line
The work may be different from an earlier collection of letters entitled ‘Riyāz̤ al-vidād’, as the present volume contains several letters (apparently undated) with references to later figures and events (such as Burhān al-Mulk, Sirāj al-Dīn Khān Bahādur). According to one passage (f. 16v), the author served Islām Khān the Bahādur Shāhī mīr ātish and later joined Nāṣir Jang ibn Niẓām Jang Āṣaf Jāh, at whose court he befriended Sayyid Ghulām ʿAlī Āzād Bilgrāmī
For a Dīvān by Rasā, see BL IO Islamic 863
Reproduces important matrial of historical and social interest, such as Prince Awrangzīb's claims against his brother, Prince Dārā Shukūh, and a letter of protest against ʿĀlamgīr's imposition of the impost or jiz̲iyah upon Hindus
