Set of five miscellaneous documents
Contents
Letter in English by a certain Ram Singh, lately of Wokingham, to an unnamed addressee appealing for friendship, support, and condescension, from a collection of five miscellaneous documents from different sources and dates
The contents detail how the author was brought up as a Hindu native of Canpoore (Kanpur), belonging to the family of a Brahmin priest. Having left home, he converted to Christianity through Rev. Gerselman (Gerfelman?), who put Ram Singh in contact with the Bishop of Calcutta (Kolkata), Rev. Daniel Welleson. He brought the author to England after five months. The bishop died two years later and his widow could not support Ram Singh. Working for a period, he then became ill for four months and was obliged to sell his cloths and stock. Ram Singh was informed that the addressee was sympathetic, hence the present letter of appeal
The letter is characterised by poor spelling and grammar, and the cursive hand is indecipherable in parts
