Four treatises
Contents
Summary of Contents: Four treatises on health, medicine, history of Persian royalty, and theories of Sufism. Nasta‘līq with shikasta elements. Fairly thick laid paper, tinted blue. 126 folios. 222 x 168 mm.; text lines variable, 148-164 x 103-130 mm. (the latter including margin text). Limp black leather covers. Purchased from A al-Shakri, 20 January 2006.1. ff. 1v-37vA treatise on preservation of health and self-treatment for travellers. By Muḥammad Mahdī ibn ʿAlī Naqī al-Sharīf. The work, comprising two maṭlabs, was composed in Isfahan during the Afghan invasion and completed on 10 Ṣafar 1141/15 September 1728.
For further details, manuscripts, and several printed editions, see Storey PL II/2 E, pp. 272-3. Fonahn (ZQPM), pp. 62-3, gives Zād al-musāfirīn dar ṭibb as the title, names the author’s father as ‘Alī Taqī, as does Edwards in the British Museum catalogue. Fonahn also states that the printed edition, published in 1276/1850, comprises no fewer than 288 folios.
Colophon (f. 37v) dated 1249/1833-4
Language(s): PersianTitle: Risālah mushtamil bar ānchih musāfir va ghayruhu rā z̤arūrat ast dar ḥifẓ-i ṣiḥḥat2. ff. 38r-96vTitle: Dar z̲ikr-i mulūk-i Furs va mashāhīr-i anbiyāʾAn account of ‘the Kings of the Persians and famous Prophets’. This does not appear to resemble any of the general works on the history of Iran, or those on its ancient monarchs, described or listed in Storey, PL I/1 pp. 237-49.
Colophon (f. 96r) dated 28 Ramaz̤ān 1249/8 February 1834
Language(s): Persian3. ff. 96v-97vA medical tract in Arabic, mainly concerning materia medica. No author is named.
Language(s): ArabicTitle: Majmaʿ al-favāʾid4. ff. 98v-127vA treatise on Sufism, chiefly discussing theoretical aspects. Neither the title nor the author are identified. The work comprises eleven faṣls, the sixth of which contains ten aṣls. Since the text in the present manuscript begins with an enumeration of these chapters, it appears that either one or two folios are missing at the beginning.
An unusual assemblage of authorities (on Sufism) are cited in the last faṣl. They include Jalāl al-Dīn Rumī, al-Sharīf al-Jurjānī, Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī, and Ibn Abī Jumhūr.
