The manuscript bears the following inscription:
William Burrows, a native of CHESTER, Master of the Singers at the Holy Trinity, and afterwards at St Mary's: Died January 1776, in the 27th year of his Age.
The Tunes to Psalms 24 (p.63) 68 (p. 52) 136 (p. 70) and 148 (p.55) were composed by him. The greater part of the Tunes is in his own hand-writing. A mutilated copy of the Tune to the 24th Psalm (p. 63) is inserted in Webbe's collection and called Burrows, where he has mistaken the Tenor for the Air and harmonized it as such.
The front board of the bound volume is wanting.
With a letter dated 8th March 1947 from Everard Jose A. B. C., 'Lay Reader in charge of Daylesford parish' (Gloucestershire) to an unknown correspondent, stating that the volume had formerly belonged to a former rector of Daylesford.

With the volume is enclosed a letter written by Everard Jose A. B. C., 'Lay Reader in charge of Daylesford parish' (Gloucestershire), dated 8th March 1947, stating that the volume had previously belonged to a former rector of Daylesford parish.
It was the impression of the former owner, Christopher Irwin, that 'There is no signature or any other clue I can find to who wrote the above [inscription], although the writing has an 18th or early 19th century appearance and is clearly different from that in the main part of the book, suggesting that this is in Burrow's hand. Clearly somebody has prized the book as it has been very skilfully repaired, probably by a professional bookbinder, and I suspect has been rebound some time in the 19th century.'
