- Administrative Context:
- Rumours of adultery pervaded the marriage of King George IV and Caroline of Brunswick after the birth of their first child and led to their separation and her move to Italy. George was embarrassed by her behaviour abroad and keen to obtain a divorce so, on her return to England, he introduced the Pains and Penalties Bill 1820 to Parliament to strip her of her title. However, it did not pass the Commons and was withdrawn.
