- Title:
- Letters from Thomas Moore to the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne
- Scope & Content:
-
Letters from the poet Thomas Moore to his friend, Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne. While the letters relate primarily to the relations between the two men, they also cover Moore's literary life, including his poetry and his writing of a history of Ireland and of his biography of Edward Fitzgerald, as well as his receipt of the memoirs of Lord Byron and their sale to Robert Murray, and Moore's anxiety over dedicating a work to Lansdowne. The letters also comment on the political and religious situations in Britain and Ireland, including political events in Paris during Moore's exile, references to the Reform Act and Lansdowne's work with the newly crowned Queen Victoria.
Also included is an early letter from Moore inviting Lansdowne to a meal, containing the poem later published as Invitation To Dinner, Addressed To Lord Lansdowne
