Album of drawings titled ‘Watercolour Drawings copied from the Pictures in the Possession of Dawson Turner, Esq.’ (letterpress title page in black and red with traces of gilt).
The album dates from 1828-1838 and includes 53 watercolours by three of the daughters of the banker, botanist, and antiquary, Dawson Turner (1775-1858), namely Hannah Sarah (1808-1883), Mary Anne (1797-1875) and Elizabeth Palgrave (1799-1852), together with two professional artists, Matthew Shepperson (1785-1874) and John Berney Crome (1794-1842).
Each drawing is signed with the artist’s initials and inscribed with the work’s title, and the album contains a manuscript index which also includes the date executed by month and year.
The drawings illustrate Turner’s collection of paintings by Dutch, Flemish, Italian and Norwich school artists.
The artists listed are: Giovanni Bellini, Adriaen Brouwer, Pieter Breugel, Agostino Caracci, Annibale Caracci, Gaspar de Crayer, John Berney Crome, Aelbert Cuyp, Gerrit Dow, Fyl, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Guido Reni, De Fleem, Meindert Hobbema, Hans Holbein, Lang Jan, Pierre Mignard, Frederik de Moucheron, Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo, Adam Pynacker, Thomas Phillips, Gaspard Poussin, Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Steen, Francesco Solimena, David Teniers the Younger, Vecelli Titian, Adriaen Van Der Werff, Sir Anthony Vandyke, Leonardo da Vinci, Sir David Wilkie and Richard Wilson.
Dawson Turner’s wife Mary (1774-1850) subsequently described the collection in the privately printed ‘Outlines in Lithography from a Small Collection of Pictures’, Yarmouth, 1840, which was accompanied by lithographs by the daughters after these watercolours.
