- Title:
- Travel journal of Laura Corcoran
- Scope & Content:
- A diary recording trips taken by Laura Corcoran with her husband Bryan Corcoran, a wire screen maker and corn machine merchant of Tower Hill, London. The earliest journey recorded is on horseback through Kent in Apr 1844 to visit several mills. In Jul 1844 Laura and Bryan visited Bristol, and saw the Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain. While Bryan stayed there for business, Laura visited Bath. The couple then travelled to Tintern Abbey and a nearby ironworks. The diary continues by describing a trip to Cambridge in Mar 1847, visiting a paper mill and some of the colleges. A trip in Sep 1848 for their wedding anniversary took in Salisbury and Stonehenge. A short passage from Feb 1851 describes a voyage from Southampton to Havre. The diary is next used in Sep 1855 to record a trip to St Ives, then Godmanchester, and home via Bury St Edmunds and Norwich. Laura also records a trip to Paris with Bryan and their three children in Mar 1856, which includes a visit to a stone quarry at Villaines-la-Gonais in the Loire valley. The final entries from Apr and May 1858 concern a return trip to Salisbury and a visit to Little Bookham in Surrey.
