64 Jewish Religious Poems in Hebrew, transcribed and annotated by Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor (HED). For many of these entries, he provides ancillary information – melody to which the poem / song should be recited / sung, acrostic [formed by the initial letters of the stichs or stanzas], name of poet, etc. – in addition to the texts of the poems / songs themselves.
Original Hebrew alphanumeric page numbering through folio 13v (= HED's p. 26), followed by a stub and then the insertion of nine separate sheets sewn together and not numbered by HED, viz. folios 14 - 22, containing more numbered poems continuing the original sequence. On folios 4v – 6v (HED's pages 8 – 12) there is some small confusion between the page numbers and the song numbers.
Some of the glosses are in the same sort of spidery script that HED used in his last years – cf. manuscript Or 17086 – indicating his ongoing revision of this manuscript.
Item 1. top of folio 1r (= HED’s p. 1). Religious poem, requesting the restoration of Israel. To the melody of the Arabic song פ'רפ'אח יא פרפאח יאבו טווינ אל לאוו. Composed by Abdallah son of Katsir of blessed memory, whose name is spelled out in the acrostic formed by the beginnings of the lines after the first line: Abdallah son of Katsir, be strong! / עבדאללה בר כצ'יר חזק. The first line reads פרוח תפרח \ מטה לבית לוי \ ביאת בן זרח \ לאל כל קוי = ‘Blossom, indeed, staff of the House of Levi! All of my hope in God is for the coming of the son of Zeraḥ’ [= the messiah]. The next line, the first with Abdallah’s acrostic, begins עיר קרית חנה \ בוא יבא ברבה[?] \ כבראשונה \ שלות עולם שלוי. ...
Item 2. bottom folio 1r (= HED’s p. 1). Title: On Debt / 'לחסרון כיס'. Bemoaning one’s fate: rich only in expenses and debts. By the sage [hakham] Sasson Israel of blessed memory (Baghdad; c. 1825 – c. 1911; see below, numbers 35 [“30”] & 38 – 43 [“33 - 38”]) / לח' ששון ישראל ז"ל. First line: ‘My heart cries out bitterly and bemoans the debt, for bad expenses none can compare’ / לבי לחסרון כיס יזעק מר יהמה. כי בתוצאות רע אין לו מי ידמה.
Item 3. Poem followed by line-by-line explanation. Folios 1v – 2r (= HED’s pp. 2-3). Introduced by Arabic statement, which HED explains in Hebrew: ‘The poem describes the drunkard, who sets his eyes on the beaker. Every stanza contains two pairs of similar words (לשון נופל על לשון), which, in Arabic, is called ‘jinAs’ / جناس = alliteration’. After the Arabic introduction, the first line begins, ‘As the snake strikes your head [rosh / ראש] without venom [rosh / רוש]’ / ומה נחש ישופך ראש בלי רוש.
Item 4. top of folio 2v (= HED’s p. 4). ‘Poem about: One who loves money will never be satisfied with money / שיר לאוהב כסף לא ישבע כסף; by the above-mentioned poet / להנז”ל.’ First line: ‘I asked the lover of money, the one who longs: For whom do you accumulate gold and an abundance of pears? Do you imagine that you will live forever, to increase years as the days of the lofty heavens?’ /שאלתי את אוהב כסף וכוסף, למי תאסוף זהב ורוב פנינים. התדמה לחיות לעד וכימי, שמי מרום כן עוד רבות בשנים.
Item 5. bottom folio 2v – folio 3r (= HED’s pp. 4-5). More by the same poet. A meditation on ‘time’, with an introductory statement, man’s complaint to time, time’s response, and another response: ‘Time is a king that judges and rules ... O time of mine, why are you my contender! ... Why do you think of me that I have sinned towards you? ... Am I not as a swift hind, constantly moving and wandering, without respite? ...’ / הזמן מלך שופט ושוטר ... זמני מה לך להיות מריבי ... מה מני [?] חשוב לי חשוב לי חטא למולך ... הלא אני כאילה שלוחה ונע ונד תמיד בלי מנוחה ....
Item 6. top folio 3v (= HED’s p. 6). Acrostic: ‘Elijah be strong!’ / אליהו חזק. The next word is unclear, but it seems to be repeated in the first line albeit in a different form. It seems to be le-adus or le-arus / לאדוס or לארוס. Opening line: ‘I sing for the firstborn son, ???? the Sabbath of Remembrance. God, for his sake remember the merit of the righteousness of his fathers! May the compassionate God, the merciful God, show him His wonders!’ / אשורר לבן בכור האדוס שבת זכור הלהים לו יזכור זכות צדקת אבותיו אל חנון אל רחום יראנו נפלאותיו.
Item 7. bottom folio 3v (= HED’s p. 6). Acrostic: ‘Jacob (x 2) be strong!’ / יעקב (כפול) חזק. By Rabbi Jacob Birdogo of blessed memory (1786 – 1843; Meknes, Morocco) / להרב יעקב בירדוגו ז”ל. Opening: ‘My Dove, return to the Hill of Frankincense’ / יונתי שובה גבעת לבונה.

Item [26, unnumbered and scored out]. Mid folio 10r. Acrostic: ‘Sadka, be strong!’ Which I, the compiler [= HED?], composed in honour of the bridegroom, Hakham (= Sage) Sadka [son of] Hakham Moses Hussein (Baghdad 1876 – Jerusalem 1961). I compose a complete poem, in honour of the union of the offspring of wisdom. Trusty is the bridegroom, whose bride is ‘Pleasant’ (Hebrew: Ne‘ima / נעימה, which is a Hebrew feminine name; in some sources her name is given as No‘am / נועם, which derives from the same root). She is his cousin, and she is consummate. God, illuminate the trusty, precious bridegroom, light of the time, planted from skilful stock, well-endowed like honeycomb and manna. / סי’ צדקה חזק, שחברתי אני המאסף לכבוד החתן ח’ צדקה ח’ משה צדקה חוצין אחבר שירה תמימה. לכבוד זווג גזע החכמה. נאמן. חתן כלתו נעימה. היא בת דודו הכלולה ? נאמן חתן יקר אור הזמן, נטע מגזע המיומן, מומן כצוף ומן, אל נאור].

Acrostic: Q-R-Ayin S-T-N (lit. ‘Tear the Satan’) / קרע שטן (Kabbalisticaly, these letters are the second of six six-letter-combinations that represent a form of the divine name, as found in many prayer-books. As a rule, these letter-combinations are focused upon while saying specific words that form their acrostics. This acrostic is accompanied by the phrase ‘Receive the song of Your nation; reinforce us and purify us, Awesome One’ / קבל רנת עמך שגבנו טהרנו נורא.) ‘By the previously mentioned [composer]’ / להנז”ל. All folios encased in the grey paper cover of the school exercise book printed for the year 1925-26. Written on the cover, on the line where the school's name is to be filled in, is the name of a Baghdadi Jewish school for children, راحيل شحمون = Rachel Shahmoun.
