Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor’s records of communal finances
- Scope & Content:
-
Hakham Ezra Reuben Dangoor (HED) was involved with the administration of various charities, including those associated with Baghdad's Great Synagogue, the support of the needy, and collections by emissaries of various Jewish communities abroad. Many of the financial records preserved here are associated with Ḳodesh la-kabiri / קודש לכבירי = ‘The Great Sanctuary’ (synagogue), which seems to have functioned as an overall communal centre supporting many communal needs and functionaries, and which was dear to HED. However, in at least one instance [MS Or 17082 (25)] the synagogue is mentioned distinctly from Ḳodesh la-kabiri. Within Ḳodesh la-kabiri, a number of these items are for the finances of the ladies’ section; and there is an inventory of the synagogue's Torah scrolls and their accoutrements. Other causes, too, are represented: interest-free loans; Hakham Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Shrem’s collection on behalf of the rabbis of Jerusalem; and the rabbinic academy Bet Zilkha. Finally, a number of these items are unidentified.
Text: Judeo-Arabic with some Hebrew. Numerals: Arabic with some Hebrew alphanumeric. Many items were found with HED’s writings on the Book of Ecclesiastes. Also, many of HED's notebooks with other writings contain, inter alia, financial records related to the ones preserved here.
Or 17082 (1): Folio 1: Inventory of sacred items in the Great Synagogue of Baghdad. Tishri 5676 [Anno Mundi = autumn 1915 CE]: Torah scrolls including their sources / donors; various accouterments for the Torah scrolls, such as cases, silver crowns, curtains for the ark, etc. Folio 2: Accounts for income on behalf of various communal functionaries, and list of donors.
Or 17082 (2): Note of debt: interest free loan of 70 rupees given by HED to Abraham Ezra Abraham Kodada from the city DYYR, to be repaid, when Abraham reached Abu Sahar, by cheque, through the agency of the Gaon Rabbi Sason Saul Mordekhai Hayyim. Date: 17 Menahem Av 5679 Anno Mundi [= 13 August 1919 CE]. Stamp seems to read, in part ‘… who trusts in God …’, and it may be the stamp of an interest-free loan society.
